Sierra de Bernia
Hiking in Sierra de Bernia — an adventure with views over the entire Costa Blanca
If you’re looking for a place to breathe the scent of wild herbs, feel the mountain breeze and see the Mediterranean Sea from above, welcome to the Sierra de Bernia. This mountain range, located between the towns of Altea, Calpe, Benissa and Xaló (Alicante), is one of the most stunning natural hiking routes on the Costa Blanca.
Why you should hike the Sierra de Bernia trail
- Incredible views — from the viewpoints you can admire Calpe and the Peñón de Ifach, Altea with its white houses and blue dome, and the surrounding mountains and valleys.
- Photogenic scenery — the natural contrasts of rock, sea and sky make this route ideal for photography and video.
- History — here you’ll find the ruins of a 16th-century fortress (Fort de Bernia), as well as the famous El Forat de Bernia tunnel — a narrow passage through the mountain that leads to the other side of the ridge.
- Accessibility — a medium-difficulty circular route suitable for experienced hikers, active travelers and families with teenagers.

What to expect on the trail
- Starting point — Casas de Bernia
The path climbs along scenic slopes surrounded by olive trees and vineyards. It’s a great spot to take your first photos — the views are already breathtaking. - El Forat de Bernia tunnel
The most iconic part of the trail. A natural 20-metre tunnel so narrow that you’ll need to crouch to pass through. On the other side, a breathtaking panorama of the Costa Blanca coastline awaits — a moment worth every step. - Fort de Bernia
The ruins of a 16th-century fortress built to protect the coast from pirates. Today it offers one of the best viewpoints in the area. - Return via the southern side
The path gently descends, revealing new landscapes — from rocky slopes to lemon-filled valleys.
Tips for hikers
- Walk the route clockwise — the first section is steeper and easier to climb up than to descend.
- Don’t forget water and snacks — there are no cafés or fountains along the way.
- Footwear — hiking shoes only! The rocks can be slippery.
- The best seasons are spring and autumn, when it’s not too hot and the landscape is at its most beautiful.
- If you’re hiking with a dog — the route is pet-friendly, but dogs must be kept on a leash.
How to get there
- By car: from Altea or Benissa — about 25 minutes. The GPS will lead you to Casas de Bernia (there’s a small parking area).
- Without a car: reaching the start of the trail is difficult without your own vehicle, so it’s best to rent a car or take a local taxi.
Why you should add this place to your must-see list
Sierra de Bernia is not just a hike — it’s a journey through mountains, history and silence, where every turn reveals a new panorama. It’s the perfect place to disconnect from the city, capture stunning photos and feel the true spirit of the Mediterranean.
