Trail description

The route starts at Pla d'Aialt and follows dirt tracks through agricultural terraces and pine forests. Along the way, you can see Corral del Somo, an old livestock enclosure, and Aljub del Xorquet, a traditional rainwater cistern.

The main highlight of the hike is the natural monument Els Arcs. A short detour leads to two impressive stone arches rising among limestone formations, considered one of the geological landmarks of the region.

After visiting the arches, the trail continues toward several viewpoints overlooking the surrounding valleys and mountain ranges, before returning to the starting point and completing the loop.

How Els Arcs were formed

The history of the arches began around 30 million years ago, when the area was covered by the sea. Different types of limestone formed, with varying hardness: softer layers eroded more quickly due to water and wind, while harder layers remained intact.

Over time, cavities formed in the rock and gradually connected. This process created the natural arches, while the more resistant limestone formed their upper spans. Erosion is still ongoing today, slowly reshaping the formations.

Useful tips

The best time to hike the route is spring and autumn. In summer there is little shade, so it is recommended to start early and bring plenty of water.

Although the trail is not difficult, rocky sections can be found near the arches, so proper hiking shoes are advised.

Els Arcs de Castell de Castells is an ideal hike for those who want to combine an easy walk, beautiful mountain scenery, and a unique natural landmark in Alicante.
