Beach de las Catedrales
Playa de las Catedrales — a natural masterpiece of Galicia
Playa de las Catedrales (Beach of the Cathedrals) is one of the most impressive natural landmarks in Spain, located in the northern region of Galicia, near the town of Ribadeo. Its name translates as “Beach of the Cathedrals” due to its giant rock arches and caves that resemble the Gothic vaults of cathedrals. This place is rightly considered one of Europe’s top natural attractions and welcomes thousands of visitors every year.
The main highlight — the play of tides
Playa de las Catedrales is truly unique because its appearance dramatically changes depending on the tide:
At low tide, the beach transforms into an open-air natural museum. Magnificent stone arches up to 30 meters high, narrow passages, hidden grottos, and fascinating rock formations are revealed. You can freely walk on the golden sand, explore the arches, take unforgettable photos, and literally touch millions of years of geological history.
At high tide, the beach is almost completely submerged under water. Walking on the sand is impossible — you’ll only see the tops of the rock formations rising from the sea. This is a great time to admire the waves crashing against the cliffs from the clifftop walking path.
Important: visiting the beach is best planned for low tide hours, which change daily according to the tide schedule.
Walking trail
Along the beach, there is a comfortable walking trail with panoramic ocean views, connecting several beaches including Las Catedrales and scenic clifftop viewpoints. This route is perfect for fresh-air walks and allows you to enjoy breathtaking views regardless of the tide level.
Booking required during high season
Due to its great popularity and in order to protect the natural environment, access is limited from July to September. During this period, you must book a free entrance ticket in advance on the website of the Galician regional government. Without a reservation, access to the beach during the high season is not permitted. It’s recommended to book a few days ahead, especially on weekends or holidays.
How to get there
The beach is located 10 kilometers from the town of Ribadeo, in the province of Lugo. You can get there by car via the A-8 highway (Ribadeo exit), or by taxi. There are also buses from Ribadeo to a stop near the beach.
Useful tips:
- Be sure to check the tide schedule for the day of your visit;
- Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on rocks and sand;
- Entry is free, but booking is mandatory during the summer months;
- There are viewpoints and a free parking lot located near the main entrance to the beach;
- There are no cafés or shops nearby, so it’s best to bring your own water and snacks.
Playa de las Catedrales is a place where nature reveals its true power and beauty. Visit to experience the grandeur of rock arches, hear the sound of the ocean, and feel the breath of ancient seas.
