Almaciga beach
Playa de Almáciga — a wild beach among Tenerife’s cliffs
Playa de Almáciga is one of the most atmospheric beaches on the northeast coast of Tenerife. It lies within Anaga Rural Park, surrounded by steep green slopes and volcanic cliffs, and feels completely different from the polished resorts of the Canary Islands’ south coast.
There are no long promenades, hotels or extensive beach facilities here. Just fine dark volcanic sand, the wild Atlantic Ocean, towering cliffs and the small village of Almáciga nearby. This peaceful, secluded atmosphere is exactly what makes the beach so appealing to travellers.
Where is Playa de Almáciga?
The beach is located in the northeast of Tenerife, in the municipality of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, around 40 km from the island’s capital. The scenic TF-134 road winds through the Anaga mountains to reach it.
The journey itself is part of the experience: the road twists along the mountain slopes, revealing new views of the ocean and rugged coastline around every bend.
Two other well-known beaches, Playa de Benijo and Playa de San Roque, are nearby, making Almáciga easy to combine with a trip around eastern Anaga.
What is the beach like?
Playa de Almáciga is a relatively small beach with dark volcanic sand and pebbles. Towering cliffs surround it, creating a particularly dramatic landscape.
Unlike many of Tenerife’s developed beaches, Almáciga has retained its wild, natural character. It is a great place to stop, sit by the shore and simply watch the Atlantic.
On a clear day, the contrast between the black sand, deep blue ocean and green slopes of Anaga makes for an incredibly photogenic landscape.
Can you swim here?
You can, but the ocean in this part of Tenerife is often rough. Strong waves and currents are possible, so Playa de Almáciga is better suited to experienced swimmers and surfers than to a relaxed family swim.
Always check the sea conditions and pay attention to warning signs before entering the water. Powerful waves can occur even when the weather is sunny.
If you simply want to enjoy the beach, it is better to walk along the shore and admire the scenery rather than enter the water when the surf is strong.
Surfing and the Atlantic atmosphere
The north coast of Tenerife is known for its waves, and Almáciga is one of the spots visited by surfers.
When conditions are right, the beach takes on a completely different character: waves crash onto the dark shore, while surfers become part of the dramatic ocean landscape.
Even if you do not surf, watching the ocean is an experience in itself. The beach is especially beautiful towards evening, as the sun slowly moves towards the horizon.
What to see nearby
One of the biggest advantages of Playa de Almáciga is its location in the heart of Anaga’s spectacular natural landscapes.
Just a few minutes away by car is Playa de Benijo, one of Tenerife’s most dramatic beaches, recognisable by the huge rock formations rising from the ocean.
It is also worth visiting Taganana, a small mountain village with traditional Canarian architecture, surrounded by lush green mountains.
Anaga itself deserves a full day: there are viewpoints, hiking trails and the famous Ruta de los Sentidos, or Path of the Senses, where you can discover the park’s unique laurel forest.
When is the best time to visit?
Playa de Almáciga is worth visiting year-round thanks to Tenerife’s mild climate. However, sea conditions can vary considerably depending on the weather and swell.
Morning and late afternoon are particularly good for walking and photography. In the evening, the beach becomes especially beautiful, while nearby Playa de Benijo is one of the most interesting places in Anaga to watch the sunset.
The beach can get quite busy at weekends and in good weather, so arrive in the morning if you prefer a quieter atmosphere.
What to bring?
Playa de Almáciga has very limited infrastructure, so it is best to come prepared:
- water and some snacks
- sunscreen
- comfortable shoes
- a towel and swimwear
- everything else you need for a few hours by the sea.
Do not expect the same kind of facilities you would find at a resort beach: Almáciga’s main attraction is precisely its natural, wild character.
Playa de Almáciga — is it worth visiting?
Absolutely, if you want to discover a different side of Tenerife — less resort-like, more natural and a little wild.
It is best visited not for a perfectly calm swim, but for the ocean, volcanic scenery, Anaga’s mountains and the feeling of being somewhere truly special. A particularly good route is Anaga Rural Park → Taganana village → Playa de Almáciga → Playa de Benijo, allowing you to see some of the most beautiful places in the northeast of the island in a single day.
Playa de Almáciga is one of those places where the journey and the landscapes along the way are just as important as the destination itself.
