Beach Cala del Barco
Cala del Barco — a small cove among the cliffs on the coast of Murcia
If you're looking for something different from a large urban beach on the coast of Murcia, and prefer a small cove with crystal-clear water, rocky cliffs and beautiful views, Cala del Barco is well worth a visit.
This small cove is located near Cabo de Palos, within the La Manga Club resort. The beach is tiny, measuring just around 40 metres, so it feels completely different from the long sandy beaches of the Costa Cálida. The shore is tucked between the cliffs, while the water is usually calm and clear.
The beach and the sea
Cala del Barco is covered with sand and small pebbles. Rocky cliffs rise on either side of the cove, and there are also rocky areas in the water. That's why it's worth bringing a mask and snorkel — the clear water is ideal for snorkelling.
Water shoes are recommended for a more comfortable entry into the sea.
One of the best things about the cove is that you can do more than simply spend a few hours on the beach. You can also walk along the surrounding cliffs, enjoy the Mediterranean scenery and take a swim in some of the hidden, almost deserted coves nearby.
How to get there
The beach is located within La Manga Club, so if you're driving, follow the signs for La Cala. There is a car park next to the restaurant, with stairs and a path leading down to the beach.
Another option is to reach the cove on foot along the coast. Cala del Barco is part of the GR-92 long-distance trail, which follows the Mediterranean coastline.
Keep in mind that the beach is not particularly accessible for people with reduced mobility.
Facilities
Despite its small size, Cala del Barco is well equipped. There is a restaurant and beach club, and you can rent sun loungers and parasols. Toilets and showers are also available.
Just above the cove you'll find La Cala restaurant, with a large terrace overlooking the sea. It's a pleasant place to stop for lunch after a swim and enjoy Mediterranean cuisine. Prices are above average.
When to visit
In July and August, the small cove can get quite busy. If you'd like to enjoy Cala del Barco when it's quieter, it's best to come in the morning or later in the afternoon.
Spring and autumn are also good times to visit, even if you're not planning to spend the whole day at the beach. For example, you can combine your visit with a coastal walk.
What to see nearby
Cala del Barco is easy to include in a road trip around southeastern Murcia. Nearby you'll find Cabo de Palos, Portmán and Calblanque Regional Park.
The coastal scenery in this area is particularly striking, with dry mountains, rocky cliffs, small coves and the deep blue Mediterranean Sea. So even if the beach feels too small for a full day by the sea, it's still worth coming here for a walk and the views.
Is Cala del Barco worth visiting?
Yes, especially if you like small, picturesque coves and crystal-clear water. This isn't a wild or secluded beach: there is a restaurant, a beach club and plenty of visitors during the high season. On the other hand, Cala del Barco lets you combine swimming, snorkelling, a coastal walk and lunch with a sea view all in one place.
If you're travelling by car, it's an especially good stop to combine with Calblanque, Cabo de Palos and Portmán for a full day exploring the coast of Murcia.
