Moors and Christians Festival of Murcia
"Moros y Cristianos" in Murcia: Medieval History in the Streets
Every September, Murcia is transformed for a few days into the setting of a medieval city. Colourful processions fill the streets, music plays, shots ring out, and participants in spectacular costumes represent two historic sides: the Moors and the Christians.
The "Moros y Cristianos" festival is one of the main events of the Feria de Murcia and a celebration of international tourist interest. It commemorates two important chapters in the city's history: its foundation during the Muslim period and the incorporation of Murcia into the Crown of Castile in the 13th century.
What is Moros y Cristianos?
Moros y Cristianos festivals are held in various cities across Spain, particularly in the east and southeast of the country. In Murcia, the tradition has its own historical roots.
The city was founded in 825 at the initiative of Abd al-Rahman II, Emir of Córdoba. In 1243, Murcia came under Castilian rule: the Muslim ruler Ibn Hud handed the city's keys to Infante Alfonso, the future King Alfonso X the Wise.
Today, these events are brought to life through colourful theatrical performances.
However, the festival should not be seen as a literal re-enactment of a medieval war. Modern Moros y Cristianos is above all a popular local tradition that combines history with music, costumes, theatre and a large-scale street celebration.
The Moros y Cristianos Parade
The main event of the festival is the grand parade, known as the Gran Desfile de Moros y Cristianos.
Numerous groups of participants march through the streets of Murcia, divided into Moorish and Christian groups. Each group has its own costumes, music and symbols.
The Moorish side is particularly striking, with its Oriental-inspired details: richly decorated costumes, turbans, colourful fabrics and elaborate ornaments. The Christian groups evoke medieval knights and warriors.
But the most impressive thing is not any individual costume, but the scale of the entire procession. Music, drums, horses, flags, huge groups of participants and the excitement of the crowds turn the centre of Murcia into a spectacular open-air show.
The parade passes through the central streets of the city and is one of the most spectacular events of the September Fair.
A festival that is about more than history
"Moros y Cristianos" is not a museum-style historical re-enactment or a performance that spectators simply watch from the sidelines.
Local residents play an active role in the celebration. Preparing for the festival takes much of the year: costumes are made, musical performances and parades are rehearsed, and the different groups organise their activities.
As a result, the atmosphere of the entire city changes during the festival. The streets fill with people in historical costumes, festive music can be heard everywhere, and familiar city squares become part of a huge open-air celebration.
Moros y Cristianos takes place as part of the Feria de Murcia, one of the city's main annual festivals. September also brings concerts, food events, fairs and other traditional celebrations.
When is the festival held?
Moros y Cristianos takes place in September, usually in the middle of the month, as part of Murcia's September Fair.
The exact dates and programme change every year. For example, in 2026 the international tourism portal Spain.info lists the celebrations from 9 to 16 September, while Murcia's official channels publish the full programme of events.
If you want to see the main parade, it is best to check the programme for the relevant year in advance, as different events take place on different days.
What should tourists see?
If you are visiting Murcia specifically for Moros y Cristianos, it is worth setting aside at least one full day for the festival.
The main parade is the best introduction to the festival. It is the largest event and brings together spectacular costumes, music, horses and dozens of festive groups.
The Medieval Camp is worth visiting in the evening, when the atmosphere is liveliest and more people gather there.
The Embajadas are particularly interesting if you want not only to enjoy the spectacle but also to understand the historical background of the festival.
Between events, you can explore Murcia's historic centre, visit the cathedral and Cardenal Belluga Square, wander through the old streets and discover traces of the city's Muslim past.
Moros y Cristianos: a way to discover another side of Murcia
Murcia is often seen as a city for a short stop on the way to the coast. During the September Fair, however, it takes on a completely different character.
Moros y Cristianos presents the city through its history: its Muslim past, medieval Castile and centuries of cultural coexistence and exchange. At the same time, it is not a quiet historical re-enactment, but a lively celebration involving the whole city.
If you are travelling around the Region of Murcia in September, it is worth checking the festival dates. Even one day is enough to experience a different side of the city, with music, medieval costumes, theatrical performances and one of the most spectacular festive parades in the region.
